Folks,
we can't do without returning to hardcore national politics. After all, we have
a huge stake in how our country is governed; and nothing is more pertinent than
the internal workings of the major political parties. So, here with go with
another look at what is happening in the NPP.
It is obvious that the
under-current propelling the rumpus in the NPP is more robust than we have
known so far.
Right from the moment that Kwadwo
Owusu Afriyie rashly urged the NPP supporters to take to the streets and
churches in white to celebrate Akufo-Addo’s victory at Election 2012, I knew
something would happen to tear apart this political camp.
Then followed heated arguments
surrounding the decision to contest the outcome of the election and the sharp
division of their ranks into pro-petition hearing and the voices of reason
urging nothing of the sort but a re-appraisal of why the party lost the
elections. Dr. Wereko-Brobby and Kwame Pianim stuck their necks out and got
lashed verbally.
In the end, the voices of reason
won but haven’t been appreciated. Instead, ostracism and open insults have been
their lot.
Now is the hour of new cracks.
Dr. Apraku won’t sit down unconcerned for Akufo-Addo to be pushed forward again
to contest Election 2016 as the NPP’s flagbearer. His bold assertions have fetched
him nothing but scorn and vain threats. He has already appeared before the NPP’s
Sanhedrin—whether browbeaten and cowed into submission or to eat back his
disqualification of Akufo-Addo as “unattractive” to the electorate, we don’t
yet know.
But there is more to the dust
that his bold assertions raised. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, NPP MP for Assin
Central, known as a major financier of the party, has launched a frontal attack
on the leadership of the party, accusing them of plain thievery of resources
meant for Election 2012 and charging the party’s delegates to kick them out of
office at the March 2014 congress.
Certainly, his scathing
bad-mouthing of Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey and his team amounts to bringing the
party’s name into disrepute, the very “offence” that has sent Wereko-Brobbey on
the mission of political suicide and fetched Dr. Apraku a harvest of hate from
the Akufo-Addo fanatics.
Now, some are agitating that
Kennedy Agyapong should also face the Sanhedrin to be disciplined. But he will
have none of such vain threats. Armed with real evidence to support his uncompromising
stance, he is daring the party’s leaders to know how to tread of face the nasty
consequences. In plain words, this is what he means: anybody who dares call him should be ready to cough up $1.5
million.
According
to him, the party would be “sorry” to invite him for questioning since he is
currently being pressured by his Chinese partners to pay up the balance of $2.5
million worth of party paraphernalia he credited in the run-up to the 2012
general elections.
“I
have not had any invitation, but if they start with that, they (the party
Elders) would be sorry because I just spoke to my partner in China…who are
those calling me? I will not honour the call of any of the National Executives.
I want neutral people…. What would happen if I leave the party? I will ensure I
recover my monies before I leave”.
“…tell
them, if they are listening. They should make $1 million ready before they call
me or else, I will not mind them…if they joke with me, they will see what I’ll
do to them. I am ready to leave the party. I don’t care, but I’ll reclaim my
money before I leave because it is destroying my business,” the out-spoken NPP

Now,
some snippets of information are trickling in to bare it all: that to boost the
NPP’s Election 2012 campaigns, some NPP stalwarts convinced Kennedy Agyapong to
import on credit motor bikes in his name, which he did through some Chinese
business friends. The optimism was that the NPP would win the elections.
Thus
a promise was made to the lady who masterminded the deal that she would be
rewarded with “juicy” contracts. An ulterior motive behind the purchase of the
motor bikes existed. These bikes were to be distributed to agric officers, NADMO
employees, the police, and some school teachers in rural areas to recover cost.
Unfortunately,
the NPP lost the elections big time and threw everything out of gear for
Kennedy Agyapong, especially. He is stuck with the bill because he ordered the
motor bikes. Unfortunately for him, there is no written agreement between him
and the NPP on this deal. And his creditors are after him.
Should
he, then, not be angry at what is happening, especially when the very party
leaders who stole those resources seem to be poking his rib-cage with their
antics to remain in office and settle on Akufo-Addo?
With
this outburst, Kennedy Agyapong has really thrown a huge challenge. Who in the
NPP leadership can do to him as has been done to Dr. Wereko-Brobby and Dr.
Apraku, among others? Is he now the NPP’s nemesis from within? Man pass me,
indeed!!
